Do you think I have a legal case against my employer for the use of the term ';jew down';?

Two of my bosses were talking right in front of me about how they ';jewed down'; the price on an air conditioner they just purchased. Do you think I have a legal case against my employer for the use of the term ';jew down';?
Nah.

People have a right to be stupid.

I would suggest you find another job.

All the best.Do you think I have a legal case against my employer for the use of the term ';jew down';?
1. You do not have to be Jewish. The law asks if a reasonable person would find the behavior offensive. The case as you describe has many precedents, so it would pass that test.

2. You do not have to have the conversation recorded. You simply need corroberation which in this case would probably not be too hard. Since it was a conversation, it is unlikely that both your bosses would lie under oath. To conspire to commit perjury is a felony and almost always resulting in jail time.

3. While you have legal options, you have to ask yourself is it worth it. You would first have to take steps available to you by going to Human Resources. If Human Resources then refused to act would you then probably have a case worth pursuing. So while you could retain an attorney, that would be costly and at this point would probably only result in you being guaranteed not to be fired from a job working with managers that don't like you.

My advice would be to first (if you are comfortable doing so) talking to the manager that used the phrase ';Jew down''; and let him/her know that you found the term offensive. If they dismiss you ,continue the behavior, or you do not feel comfortable talking to the manager, you then go to both Human Resources or that persons manager. If after that it has not been resolved to your satisfaction or you then feel that you are the object of reprecussions from your complaining, then by all means consult an attorney.

edit: Do not be worried about being fired after starting the process. While most states consider employment ';at-will'; unless otherwise specified, you would have ample grounds for a wrongful termination suit where the damages could be far in excess of your lost salary.
Unlikely, unless they knew you were Jewish and were clearly making the remark so that you'd be sure to overhear. However, assuming the company is large enough, there is probably a procedure in place for making anonymous complaint to HR. If this is a frequently-occuring problem, file the complaint. If no action is taken and the behaviour continues, then possibly you might have actionable legal recourse - just do so with the realization that you may be bidding farewell to any chance of advancement with that company. Unless you have a spotless record and history of excellent performance reviews, proving retaliation for your lawsuit is tough...
You should complain formally, and make sure it is written and put in

your employment files. Only if this is a continuing situation that you repeatedly complain formally about will anything get done. But be prepared...you could get fired b4 it gets to the point where you can do anything about it.
That's appalling. If I heard anyone say that I would definitely call them on it. Nobody should have to put up with that. If they continue doing it, start making a note of the time and date, and yes, ultimately you might have a case.

You might also, first, want to remind these people that this type of 'harmless' anti semitism resulted, finally, in the Holocaust.

edit to NYMPHOMORON

When you say 'jews are cheap' and then show you base this on ONE Jew, you show yourself to be a bigoted little fool. Grow up.
For what?

It's a bad choice of words but.....

The ';Amendments'; only apply to Government.

Your ';case'; would consists of first informing the employer of any grievous actions (giving notice).

If the actions repeat (and you were allowed to keep your job), then a complaint could be filed.

A lot of work if you ask me.
Only if you are Jewish and can get it one tape.

If you do that make sure and make some complaints to cooperate 1st about nonspecific details, it will help them just pay you off...

You will have an easier time too if it looks like you have been treated differently.
I'd think so. Talk to a lawyer. I threatened to sue an employer one time for using the term (****** rigging). There is no need for terms like these. They are just hurtful and mean. Good day and God Bless.
No.

You must tell them you're offended and if they continually repeat it, you could have a case for hostile work environment.

Are you Jewish?
Not right off the bat.

Talk to the Human Resources department first.

It's only if they refuse to stop making the work environment hostile that they can get nailed.
Got any evidence?

Because it was a personal conversation... that might hurt your case.
Maybe if you're Jewish.

You might talk to them about how that offends you before making a federal case out of it.

Sometimes people just need to let things go.
I think that is totally offensive. Don't know if you have a legal case though. Talk to an attorney.
HR should be contacted first
I doubt it! Sorry! And if you try and sue, good luck finding another job afterwards :o(
Not really. Just because he's a punk doesn't mean you can sue him.
No, sorry, but you don't have any proof.
I don't know, are they jews?

It could be a compliment if you consider bargaining skills to be a good thing!

Lol. Jews do tend to be cheap. I dated a half jewish guy one time. He was an accountant and made 70k a year but insisted on taking me to the McDonalds.
